Institutional BRL and Dollar-Stablecoin Liquidity: Liquidity Provider vs. FX-as-a-Service
How institutional BRL and USDC/USDT liquidity works in Brazil: the liquidity provider model, FX-as-a-Service, API and OTC channels, Pix and settlement timing.
Institutions that need to move between Brazilian reais and dollar stablecoins are served by two distinct models: a liquidity provider model, where the provider supplies large-scale liquidity to authorized institutions, and an FX-as-a-Service model, where a company embeds currency conversion in its own product. Crown FX, the institutional foreign-exchange infrastructure of Crown, operates both, converting BRL or BRLV to USDC or USDT and back, with Pix on the real side.
The liquidity provider model
In this model, Crown supplies liquidity at scale, with a competitive quote, to institutions authorized to operate in the virtual asset exchange market in Brazil: banks, brokers and virtual asset service providers (VASPs). Access is through API or an OTC desk. The typical use is a proprietary desk or redistribution to the institution’s own retail clients, with immediate execution of large volumes.
The FX-as-a-Service model
Here the client is a company that wants currency conversion inside its own experience: remittance and international payment platforms, marketplaces and e-commerce with suppliers or customers abroad, travel platforms, ERP software with a financial module, and fintechs serving companies with international flows. The company integrates the Crown APIs and keeps the customer on its own platform and monetizes the conversion, while Crown handles settlement and the regulatory reporting, including the transactions of the client’s end users. The treasury side of this case is analyzed in paying Brazilian suppliers with a stablecoin.
Two channels: API and OTC desk
Execution runs through API, which is automatic and instant and integrates with the client’s own system, or through the Crown OTC desk, where orders are placed directly with operators over WhatsApp or Slack, the channel indicated for large volumes. An operation follows a fixed sequence: the client requests a quote, the desk returns it with the full spread visible, the client confirms, execution is immediate at the locked price within applicable operational limits, and settlement happens in real time.
Assets and settlement timing
On the real side, Crown FX operates with BRL via Pix and with BRLV. On the dollar side it operates with the USDC and USDT stablecoins, in both directions, inbound and outbound. BRLV is optional: a client can buy and sell USDC and other available virtual assets directly with reais. Operations through API execute instantly and settle within minutes (D+0). Very large volumes may settle within the business day, until the close of the settlement grid at 18:00 Brasília time, and Crown can also settle at D+1 or D+2 if the client prefers.
Tax treatment and reporting
Crown FX trades virtual assets, not foreign currency, so buying a virtual asset with reais involves no effective conversion of currencies. Without a foreign-exchange operation proper, there is no taxable event for the IOF-Câmbio tax. Crown describes this as non-incidence, not exemption. Crown performs the mandatory reporting to the Central Bank of Brazil, consolidating each month’s transactions in the required format. Technical documentation is available at docs.crown-brlv.com.
Where this fits
The choice between the two models depends on whether the institution is itself authorized to operate in this market and wants liquidity, or wants to offer conversion inside a product without carrying the regulatory routine. The holding side of the same flows, where the stablecoin sits between legs, is covered in where a Brazilian real stablecoin can be held, and the use in settlement of tokenized assets in on-chain settlement for tokenized real-world assets in Brazil.
